Southend were keen on O'Donovan when he was playing for Cork City
Southend United have completed the signing of Sunderland striker Roy O'Donovan on a one-month loan deal.
The 24-year-old could have his temporary spell at the League One club extended to three months.
O'Donovan has had limited chances for the Black Cats since he moved from Cork City in 2007 and spent last season on loan at Dundee United and Blackpool.
The Republic of Ireland B international will be available to play in Saturday's game at Brighton.
O'Donovan will link up with fellow Sunderland loanee Jean-Yves M'Voto, who is also at Roots Hall until January.
