Southend are "considering their response" after teenage forward Gary Hooper's U-turn over a new contract. The 19-year-old was expected at Roots Hall on Thursday to sign a new two-year deal, but has told the club he is only willing to commit himself for one year.
Shrimpers assistant manager Paul Brush told BBC Essex: "We are disappointed with Gary's lack of long-term commitment to Southend.
"We will consider our response over the weekend," he added.
Hooper joined Southend from Grays last summer, starting just three games but making 16 substitute appearances.
He also spent part of the season on loan at Leyton Orient.
