Bentley decided to play in League One with Gillingham |
Former Southend United midfielder Mark Bentley has told BBC Essex that leaving Roots Hall was one of the hardest decisions he has had to make. Bentley turned down an offer to stay with the Blues and moved to Gillingham.
He told BBC Essex: "I have had two and a half great years at Southend and I owe them a great deal for taking me out of non-league football.
"I weighed everything up and the two year contract with Gillingham gives me a bit more security."
"I spoke to Southend manager Steve Tilson and he couldn't guarantee how many games I would play and I didn't want to get to the end of next season and not have a contract.
"It can be difficult being a footballer when so many players are looking for deals.
"It's been a dream two years with two promotions but all good things have to come to an end."
