Southampton captain Kelvin Davis feels the club can make a big impact in League one under new boss Alan Pardew.
The Saints keeper pledged his future to the club after declining a move to West Ham earlier this summer.
Saints kick off at home to last season's play-off finalists Millwall on Saturday.
Davis told BBC Radio Solent: "We do need to get off to a fast start but I think we have the right characters in the dressing room to do that."
Southampton have been handicapped with a 10-point penalty after the club's parent company entered administration before coming under new ownership.
Davis says everyone knows how important it is to wipe out the deficit as quickly as they can.
"The pressure of trying to get to nought points is there, but we need to accept it and get over that threshold as soon as we can."
