Southampton's latest signing Jan-Paul Saeijs says his respect for Saints boss Jan Poortvliet played a part in his decision to move to England.

The 30-year-old defender has joined the Saints from Dutch top-flight side Roda JC on loan until the end of the season.

And the Dutch centre-half told the club website: "Jan has a fantastic record in Holland and he's a good coach too.

"Southampton is a big club and compared to where it should be it's standing at the moment is too low."

He added: "I love the football here and I think that it is the most beautiful game in the world."
