Saints boss expects Jones to go
Southampton striker Kenwyne Jones
Jones joined Southampton in July 2004
Southampton boss George Burley admits he expects Trinidad and Tobago striker Kenwyne Jones to leave the club.

Jones, 22, who ruled himself out of selection for Saturday's 3-2 win over Stoke, has been targeted by Derby.

"It's a shame but when you have someone who is excellent in this division, Premier League clubs will be interested," said the Saints manager.

"You don't want to have to sell your best players but sometimes other issues take these things out of your hands."

Jones, who played at the 2006 World Cup, joined Saints from Trinidad club W-Connection in July 2004 for a nominal fee.

He had loan spells at Stoke and Sheffield Wednesday but when he returned to St Mary's, he became a first-team regular, scoring 19 goals in 44 appearances.

Last week, Derby boss Billy Davies admitted he was interested in signing the player before the transfer window shuts - despite failing with an initial bid of 2m.

"A lot more firepower is required at Derby County, and we're working very hard to do that," he said.

"That includes Kenwyne Jones. We're in discussions and, along with other targets, we're hoping we can conclude deals."
