Shrewsbury Town defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff has been called into the Australia squad.

The 28-year-old will take part in a five-day European training camp from 22 March, but will be back in time to play against Bradford City.

"It's almost a trial basis for the European Australians," Cansdell-Sherriff's club manager Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"We keep our fingers crossed he doesn't pick up any injuries."

The Sydney-born defender has made over 100 appearances for Shrewsbury since joining Town in 2008.

"We're pleased he's got the opportunity to go and improve himself for a good footballing nation now. I think Australia has good players, so for him to be invited to go and training with them is testament to how will he's been playing for Shrewsbury," Turner added.

Cansdell-Sherriff does have international experience, gained as part of the Australia squad to play in the 2004 Olympics in Greece. Australia lost 1-0 to Iraq in the quarter-finals.
