Former Shrewsbury Town captain Jake King has tipped the club's new manager Graham Turner to repeat his promotion success of the 1978/79 season.

Turner, who led The Shrews into the old second division, was appointed as boss at Greenhaus Meadow on Friday.

King told BBC Radio Shropshire: "I know people have been waiting a long time for promotion, but I'll be putting my money on Shrewsbury next year.

"He's an icon and is coming back to a club that has come on a long way."

Turner first took charge of Shrewsbury in 1978 leading the club to promotion in his first season, with King as his captain.

The club more than held its own in what is now known as the Championship, and went on a number of memorable cup runs.

Turner's success at Shrewsbury led to moves to Aston Villa (1984) and Wolves (1986), before he took over at Hereford in 1995.

King, who himself was a later manager at Shrewsbury, added: "He's been at the top, knows the game inside out, and will be well organised.

"Fans will be delighted to have Graham at the club but they've got to be patient.

"Everyone wants automatic promotion, but you know - the play-offs would be a success."
