Shrewsbury Town failed in a bid to make a loan deadline-day signing after having an approach for Carlisle United defender Peter Murphy turned down.
Murphy, 29, was due to sign for his former Carlisle boss Paul Simpson just before Thursday's window closed.
But the Cumbrians had to pull the plug when a replacement they had lined up fell through.
"We did receive a request, but we feel Peter is a key member of our squad," said Carlisle boss Greg Abbott.
Shrewsbury manager Simpson had been looking to strengthen his defence, but was unable to nail down any signings.
"That's life," Simpson told Town's club website.
"I would have liked to have some extra players to strengthen us defensively over the Christmas period, but we will have to go with what we've got."
The only deal Shrewsbury did on deadline day was allowing teenage striker Andre Gray to join non-league neighbours AFC Telford United.
