Doncaster Rovers club captain Graeme Lee has become Paul Simpson's first new signing for Shrewsbury Town.

Defender Lee, 29, has moved west to Shropshire initially on a month's loan.

Simpson told BBC Radio Shropshire: "He's a captain-type player with the experience under his belt that we need in our young squad.

"He's played over 300 games at senior level, he's been involved in promotions, and he'll freshen up the side," he added.

Lee will make his debut at Dagenham at the weekend as Shrewsbury aim to bury any lingering fears of being caught up in the League Two relegation battle.

"I know what he's about," added Simpson, who took over at Oteley Road last Wednesday. "He's a player I've seen a fair bit over the years and he'll give us extra options in defence."

Lee is fully fit after surgery on an ankle injury last year, but he has found himself unable to command a regular place in the Doncaster side ahead of new signings there. He has also spent a period this season on loan at Hartlepool.

Simpson is looking to make at least one more signing for Shrewsbury before next Thursday's 'emergency loan' transfer deadline.
