Sheffield Wednesday striker Neil Mellor will undergo a scan after twisting his ankle in Tuesday's 3-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at Carlisle.
Mellor was carried off in the Owls' area semi-final tie after an innocuous challenge with Lubomir Michalik.
Irvine told BBC Radio Sheffield: "He's better than we feared. He's putting weight on it now, that's a good sign.
"We'll just need to assess him tomorrow [on Wednesday]. He's twisted his ankle, so we'll see how he is."

Irvine added: "He couldn't feel his ankle at the time so we feared the worst as far as that was concerned.
"We certainly are happier now with how he is than than when it first happened."
Mellor is Wednesday's top scorer this season having bagged 12 goals in all competitions.
