Varney signed a three-and-a-half year contract at Derby, worth up to 1.5m
Sheffield Wednesday have signed Derby County striker Luke Varney on an initial one-month loan.
The former Crewe player, 26, joined the Rams on a permanent deal from Charlton in January for a fee which was in the region of £1m.
Wednesday manager Brian Laws told BBC Radio Sheffield that he is delighted to have made the signing.
"It was an opportunity that I couldn't turn down. He is a good player and I am delighted to have him," he said.
"Moving to Sheffield Wednesday is not just a short-term measure. If things go well for him then there is no reason why we wouldn't look at him for the long-term as well.
On a month's loan you get to know the player as a person and what they are like on the pitch

"If a player comes in, does really well, fits into your setup and then kicks on, these are the things that strike deals.

Varney will not be able to play against Derby County when the two sides meet at Hillsborough on 11 April.
