Dott opposed to Crucible switch

Crucible is home of snooker - Dott

Graeme Dott believes it would be a mistake to move the World Championship away from The Crucible.

World Snooker is currently investigating the possibility of taking the showpiece event to either China or Dubai from Sheffield.

"I personally think we should never move from The Crucible," the 2006 champion told BBC Radio Scotland.

"It's the home of snooker and it's where all the players like playing. It's like Wimbledon is for tennis."

The Crucible has been hosting the World Championship since 1977 but that run could come to an end after the 2010 event.

"It's a fantastic place to play and I think it would be a bad idea to move," added Dott.

"If we were to move from The Crucible, it would need to be a fantastic offer. It would need to be for a lot more money."

Former Crucible finalist Mark Selby also believes the event should remain at its current venie.

Writing on his personal blog, Selby said: "The Crucible is the home of snooker, with all those years of tradition.

"I would be disappointed to see it leave Sheffield, the two go hand in hand. If it went elsewhere, it wouldn't feel the same and I'm sure all the other players agree.

"It's not the biggest tournament venue and you would get more spectators elsewhere but, as a playing arena, nowhere compares, especially when you get down to the one-table situation.

"You just would not get the same atmosphere that you get at The Crucible.

"It's a bit like being a gladiator entering the arena - everyone is sitting so close and right of top of you.

"It's such a tight space and you almost feel like they can just reach out and touch you."

But Dott's fellow Scot John Higgins does not share the view of his friend and has previously expressed his backing for a move overseas.

And the two-time world champion repeated his view that snooker must be open to change.

"It's (The Crucible) the best venue we'll probably ever play at but, if you have other countries that want the World Championship and are willing to throw so much more money at the sport, I think you've got to go," he said.

"I don't think we're a big enough sport to say we'll just sit still in Sheffield till our dying days.

"I'd say we should take snooker to other parts of the world to make it bigger and better."

Dott, who has been afflicted by depression, has suffered first round defeats in the two years since he won the sport's most prestigious tournament.

But he insists his health problems are behind him as he prepares for next week's event, where he will meet Barry Hawkins.

"Barry's going to be a top 16 player next year, so he'll probably go in as favourite," said Dott.

"But I'm playing okay, so hopefully I can do well.

"I'm practicing hard and if I can get a little bit of confidence when I'm down there, you never know, but I'm in a really tough half of the draw."

Dott, who will be buoyed by a recent win over Mark Selby in China, does think changes are required in the way the sport is organised.

"I just think we need more tournaments," he added. "We don't have anywhere near the amount of tournaments we should have."

Meanwhile, Higgins was predicting a bleak future for the sport in his homeland.

"It's going to be tough for snooker in Scotland," he predicted. "When the likes of myself, Graeme, Stephen Hendry and Steven Maguire start winding down, there's not a lot of talent coming through.

"And that's a shame. Ever since Stephen Hendry came through in the late 1980s, snooker has been one of Scotland's best sports.

"We've never received enough backing or government support. They've not really been recognising snooker as a sport and not putting any money back into the game.

"We've produced world champions, yet we don't get anything like the money put into things like tennis and cricket."
