Geoff Sheard, the man trying to buy Sheffield Wednesday, claims he could be in full control of the club in a matter of days, BBC Radio Sheffield reports.
It follows the decision by the fans group Wednesdayite to sell their 10% stake to him.
Sheard has also agreed deals with Owls director Geoff Hulley and ex-board members Dave Allen and Keith Addy who between them hold a 30% shareholding.
"This is a significant stage. We are now just days away," said Sheard.
The Lancashire-based businessman can still acquire a controlling stake in the club without purchasing Wednesdayite's shares.
"It's great that their members have voted to sell and I thank them for that but as everyone is aware we are also talking to the other parties," added Sheard.
Wednesdayite chairman Darryl Keys said: "I hope this sends a resounding message to the club, its directors and the fan base at large that we have never been a stumbling block to any investor."
Sheard will attend Sheffield Wednesday's opening game of the new Championship season against Burnley on Saturday.
