Kenny tested positive for the banned substance ephedrine in May

Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at Bramall Lane until the summer of 2011.

The 31-year-old is currently serving a nine-month ban after failing a drugs test in May.

"He will now have the chance to prove that he's still one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship," said Blades manager Kevin Blackwell.

"We'll have a quality player available, albeit not until next season."

Kenny, who joined the Blades from Bury in 2002, tested positive for the banned substance ephedrine after last season's Championship play-off tie with Preston.

The Republic of Ireland international will be able to return to action following the ban in April and will be available for the final three Championship games of the season.

The Halifax-born stopper, who is currently not permitted to train with United, will then be the subject of target testing for a period of two years.
