Sharp disappointed as Iron held
By Mark Mitchener

Billy Sharp
Sharp has already scored six times for Scunthorpe this season
Scunthorpe striker Billy Sharp was left frustrated after they could only draw 1-1 with Bournemouth at Dean Court.

Sharp himself was foiled twice late on by Cherries goalkeeper Gareth Stewart.

"The other 10 lads have done brilliantly but I'm disappointed with myself as I should have got us three points," Sharp told BBC Sport.

"We weren't at our best in the first 15 minutes, but Neil MacKenzie put us ahead with a great finish, and we got better as the game went on."

But although the 20-year-old was unable to add to the six goals he has already grabbed this season, Iron boss Brian Laws was quick to leap to his striker's defence.

I think we should be a bit further up the league

"I'd have put money on him to score - Billy's absolutely distraught as he knows he had the opportunities to win it for us," Laws said.

"But he's won us so many games, so he's got nothing to be ashamed of.

"That's what happens in football - sometimes you miss the easy ones, but the difficult ones might go in off your shin."

Sharp and fellow front man Andy Keogh grabbed most of the headlines last season, after firing a combined total of 39 goals on Scunthorpe's return to League One.

And former Sheffield United man Sharp feels there is still more to come from Laws' side.

"Andy and I got a lot of press last season, so a lot of people know about us now," Sharp added.

"I think we should be a bit further up the league, as our performances have been good - especially at home.

"I felt we were the better side at Bournemouth, but it's the same old story - we should have won."
