Rushden and Diamonds have signed defender Jamie Stuart from Blue Square Premier rivals Grays Athletic.
The 32-year-old was club captain at the New Recreation Ground, where he also had a spell as joint-assistant manager.
Diamonds boss Justin Edinburgh told the club's website: "He's certainly someone who is experienced.
"He's a great leader both on and off the pitch, which I think was needed. I've worked with him before, so I trust him 100%."
Stuart started his career with Charlton Athletic, before going on to play for for Millwall, Bury, Southend and Hornchurch.
The former England Under-21 international told the club's website: "I am a no-nonsense defender.
"Also with my experience I can help a lot of the younger players in the team.
"We're looking to be challenging for the play-offs and I think it's possible with the squad we've got."
