Rushden and Diamonds midfielder Curtis Woodhouse will hang up his football boots in early 2009 so he can pursue a career in professional boxing.

The 28-year-old, who started his football career at Sheffield United, has won all nine welterweight bouts he has fought since turning pro in 2006.

Woodhouse said he was desperate to devote all of his time to boxing.

"I will probably be looking at packing it in after Christmas in the new year," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"Right now I am on the transfer list at Rushden and Diamonds so I think they are trying to get rid of me, but they can't seem to find any buyers at the minute."

The Driffield-based welterweight has played over 300 games for seven clubs in an 11-year career, but now he wants to focus on his new career.

"I don't see the point in me carrying on doing the football any more because it's not something I want to do anymore. I'm just doing it to pay the bills," he said.

"I have just sorted out a 12-month sponsorship deal so I will look for that to provide for the family so I can concentrate fully on the boxing.

"I just have a few loose ends to tie up at Rushden and then I think it will be all over there."
