Reading striker Noel Hunt may miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his knee injury on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old has been injured since last season and it is hoped the operation will rectify the problem.
The extent of the lay-off will be established in the next few weeks, but the club fears he may miss all of the remaining Championship fixtures.
Hunt is also out of the Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off matches against France on 14 and 18 November.
Meanwhile, on-loan Darren O'Dea returned to training and may be available for Saturday's match at Coventry.
