Sonko joined the Royals in 2004 |
Reading defender Ibrahima Sonko has signed a new contract to stay at the Madejski Stadium until the end of the 2009/10 season. The 25-year-old centre-half's previous deal was due to expire in June 2008 but he has agreed an extension.
"Ibrahima is a vital player for us and I am delighted," said Royals chairman John Madejski.
"He is an exceptionally good defender and an equally important presence off the pitch."
Madejski added: "He will play a central role in our continued development in the next few years.
"He has fantastic loyalty and commitment to the club, as demonstrated last season when he turned down the opportunity of playing in the African Cup of Nations to help our push for promotion, and that kind of attitude is the foundation of the success we've enjoyed in recent years."
Sonko has made 111 appearances since signing from Brentford in the summer of 2004.
He joins skipper Graeme Murty, goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann and midfielder Glen Little in signing new deals with the high-flying Royals.
