Oster cool on Wales recall hopes
John Oster
Oster has won 13 caps for Wales
John Oster says he is not holding his breath over a Wales recall despite playing a pivotal role in Reading's romp to the Championship title.

The 27-year-old has been overlooked since John Toshack took over as manager from Mark Hughes in November 2004.

Midfielder Oster has been tipped for a return to the squad for May's matches, but he said: "We'll have to see about that. That's up to John Toshack.

"I'll leave squad decisions to him. I'll just get on with my football."

Oster's last appearance for Wales came in a World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland back in September 2004.

But ever since Toshack took over the reins two months later, the right winger has been left in the international wilderness.

He says he has never even spoken to the manager.

I don't want to be involved in an end of season trip when everyone's pulled out

Wales play two friendlies next month against a Basque XI (20 May) and Trinidad and Tobago (27 May), but Toshack has given no indication that Oster is in his plans.

Oster says he would relish the opportunity to add to his 13 caps, but he admits he would find it difficult to accept an invitation to join the squad for those matches.

"When you look at the players in the squad, personally I think I'm good enough to be in there, but that's not my decision," he added.

"I'm not one to throw my toys out of the pram, but I don't want to be involved in an end of season trip when everyone's pulled out.

"I haven't been involved in any of the qualifiers for many months, so he can't expect me to give up my spare time in the summer when I've booked holidays. I think that's out of order."

Reading thumped Cardiff 5-2 at Ninian Park on Saturday and effectively ended the Bluebirds' play-off hopes.

But Oster has tipped Dave Jones' side to mount a stronger promotion challenge next season.

"They've come up against us twice now and we've scored 10 goals against them," said Oster. "They're probably glad we won't be in the same division next season!

"But I'm sure the (Cardiff) manager knows what he needs and he'll be working towards that in the summer.

"They've got some good individuals - I think what they need is basically what we've got. We've got a good team spirit.

"But they've got the basis on a good team with players like Jason Koumas, who on his day is the best player in this division.

"If the manager can get the best out of him, then hopefully he'll show it for Cardiff and they'll be right up there pushing next season."
