Smith's side have lifted the league trophy for the second year running

Walter Smith avoided questions about his future as manager after his Rangers side were presented the Scottish Premier League trophy.

Smith and his backroom team have been operating without contracts while the cash-strapped club seek a new owner.

"I know what you want to ask and I will try hard not to answer you," he told BBC Scotland when quizzed.

"We'll sit down and see what we want to do, but we'll enjoy our holiday first and we'll see where we go from there."

Rangers ended the season by conceding two stoppage-time goals as Motherwell fought back to draw 3-3 at Ibrox.

But Rangers had already secured the title with a victory over Hibernian and finished the season six points clear of Celtic despite their Glasgow rivals' win over Hearts in Edinburgh.

And, although chairman Alistair Johnston has travelled from his base in the USA for talks with prospective buyers and with Smith, no announcement has been forthcoming.

"When we won it at Easter Road, the newspapers and other parts of the media were captivated by what is going to happen at Rangers," said Smith.

"We are no further forward. We will just try to enjoy today's celebrations and that's as far as we will go at the present moment."

Asked if he could give up such trophy-winning occasions with Rangers, Smith preferred to just enjoy the moment after a season when they also lifted the Co-operative Insurance Cup.

"I've been lucky," he said. "I have had a lot of occasions like this. I have enjoyed every one of them.

"I have enjoyed this championship as much as any one I have been involved in before.

"It is fantastic for everybody. We are all delighted. It seems a long time since we won it.

"We have had to wait a couple of weeks to get it and I'm delighted that it eventually came our way."

The game against Motherwell was itself quickly forgotten, although Smith did say that he did not think the penalty that allowed Lukas Jutkiewicz to score a late equaliser should have been awarded.

Kris Boyd had opened the scoring for Rangers to finish the season as the top marksman in the SPL, but the Scotland international who has attracted interest from the likes of Birmingham said that he had yet to decide whether to remain with Rangers.

Fellow striker Nacho Novo and left-back Stevie Smith, who are also both out of contract, indicated that they are likely to leave Ibrox and Smith hinted that the debt situation meant others could follow.

"We've got a situation where we have six out of contract and we haven't agreed a contract with any," he said.

"It is not always the club's choice. Sometimes it can be the player's choice.

"We will just have to wait to see what happens. Our only objective this evening is to enjoy the presentation of the trophy and look back on what has been a successful season for us."
