Rangers exit door open for Rothen

Jerome Rothen
Rothen has struggled to make an impact at Ibrox under Walter Smith

Jerome Rothen is free to leave Rangers, with manager Walter Smith admitting the winger's loan spell has not worked out.

The 31-year-old moved to Glasgow on a year-long deal from Paris St Germain at the end of August but has struggled to make an impact.

Rothen has also suffered from illness and the last of his eight Rangers appearances came on 20 October.

Meanwhile, Kirk Broadfoot, out of contract at the end of the season, has expressed his desire to stay at Ibrox.

The versatile defender has only just returned to the first team after a nine-month injury lay-off and is looking forward to a busy schedule over the festive period.

The 25-year-old former St Mirren player has not yet been offered terms to extend his contract but insists he is only concentrating on getting matches under his belt.

"I don't think it's affecting me at all," he replied, when asked about his contract situation. "The main thing for me was to get fit and get back playing.

"I know that Martin Bain (Ibrox chief executive) has contacted my agent but for now that's all I know. Obviously, you want your future sorted out but now I'm just happy to be playing again.

"Right now I'm concentrating on getting a run of games in the first team with Rangers and I think the fact that Martin Bain has been in contact with my agent is an indication that the manager wants me to stay."

Rothen, who was in the France squads for Euro 2004 and Euro 2008 is still sidelined with a virus, although he was cleared of suspected swine flu.

"We can let him go, come to an arrangement with him," said manager Walter Smith.

"It hasn't worked out for us, although the lad is ill at the present moment.

"If he wants to go back in the transfer window, we'll let him go back and play in France for the second half of the season."
