Scotland boss Walter Smith says Barry Ferguson being stripped of the Rangers captaincy is a worrying development. The 28-year-old midfielder, who also skippers the Scotland side, was dropped for the 1-0 win over Motherwell after a dispute with Ibrox boss Paul Le Guen.
"Barry's situation is something new," Smith told the Daily Mail.
"It's important he plays and that he's involved. It's important all our main players do. I'd put him in with the rest of the guys in this situation."
Scotland, who top Group B of the Euro 2008 Qualifiers, play Georgia on 24 March before facing Italy four days later.
Le Guen said he dropped Ferguson because his skipper had undermined him in the dressing room and was not performing as he wished.
Ferguson's agent held talks with Rangers chairman Sir David Murray on Wednesday in an effort to resolve the dispute.
John Viola said Ferguson wanted to remain at Ibrox and would only reluctantly speak to interested clubs if he was told his future lay elsewhere.
Le Guen left Rangers by mutual consent on Thursday.
