Gavin Rae led the way in training on Monday

Rae will lead the side in place of the Scotland midfielder at Motherwell after Ferguson was stripped of the captaincy.

"I'm caught in the crossfire a little bit, but what's happened has nothing to do with me," said Rae.

"I don't even know what's been said between the pair of them and, to be honest, I don't want to know."

Rae, who has not even been a regular starter, is determined to make the most of his opportunity.

But he anticipates a frosty reaction to the switch from supporters loyal to Ferguson.

"I know there will be people out there, Rangers supporters, who'll question what happened," said Rae.

"I'm not stupid, I've hardly played for the first team this season after coming back from injury."

The 29-year-old midfielder had expected to be dropped from the squad to face Motherwell when he was called for talks with manager Le Guen.

Rae had intimated he wanted to leave Rangers during the transfer window in a bid to salvage his career - and Aberdeen were rumoured to be weighing up a move.

"I walked into the room expecting to be told I was bombed and walked out new captain of Rangers," he said.
