McLeish considered quitting Gers
Rangers manager Alex McLeish
Alex McLeish has admitted that he has felt like quitting Rangers - as speculation continues about his future.

George Burley, Paul Le Guen, Ottmar Hitzfeld and Alan Curbishley have all been reported as possible replacements.

And Ibrox boss McLeish told Uefa's Champions League magazine: "This is a tough place to manage and, at times, I've thought 'Do I need the hassle?'

"But this is a great club to be at and it would be a hard place to leave of your own free will."

Rangers were knocked out the CIS Insurance Cup by Celtic in midweek and are 12 points behind their Glasgow rivals and Hearts in the Scottish Premier League.

Champions League qualification from Group H is also on a knife edge.
I don't think my record is too bad at all

And some have speculated that Rangers chairman David Murray will use the break for international fixtures to bring in a new man in time for next weekend's crucial league meeting with Celtic.

"I knew that there were no guarantees when I came here because of the turmoil that we inherited by losing players from the Dick Advocaat era and in trying to rebuild a team that would immediately beat Martin O'Neill's Celtic," said McLeish.

"That was never going to be easy given that players such as Henrik Larsson were at their peak.

"I'm not one to shout about individual triumphs, but I don't think my record is too bad at all."

McLeish has won seven trophies in four years at Ibrox.

"My worst nightmare would have been not to have won any silverware, but we have shown our resilience and determination in that regard," he added.

"I don't think I could ever let anyone take away the success I've had at Rangers domestically.

"But, from the point of view of people outside looking in, I know that doing well in Europe reflects well on the club and the manager."

Meanwhile, Hitzfeld had rejected overtures from Hearts before expressing an interest in taking over at Rangers.

But the former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund coach appears to have been unhappy with the amount he would have been given to spend on players by both clubs.

Fenerbahe coach Christophe Daum is also believed to have expressed an interest in the Rangers job.

George Burley, recently sacked as Hearts boss despite leading the Edinburgh club to the top of the SPL, is thought to be attracted by the Ibrox challenge.

Bookmakers have been swamped with bets on former Olympique Lyonnais coach Le Guen, while fellow Frenchman and former Monaco boss Didier Deschamps has also been linked with Rangers.

Rangers were interested in Curbishley before appointing McLeish and are believed to have inquired about the amount of compensation required to take him from Charlton Athletic.

Former Rangers players Terry Butcher, presently with Motherwell, and Graeme Souness, a former Ibrox boss now at Newcastle United, could also be in Murray's thoughts.
