Ferguson to give youth a chance at Preston North End

Preston manager Darren Ferguson has revealed that he is planning to include some of the club's young players against Scunthorpe this weekend.

North End have won just one in nine and are five points off the bottom three.

Ferguson told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I'm not happy with the results since I've been in - five draws out of the last six at home. It's not good enough.

"I've said from day one that I want young players coming through here and maybe it's time to do it now."

Since his arrival at Deepdale in January, Ferguson has given winger Danny Mayor his debut at the age of 19 and has regularly included midfielder Adam Barton, 18, as part of his match day squad.

Ferguson said: "Danny Mayor and Adam Barton are the two I would have to say. Adam Barton is a really good player.

"I think I've said a few times you have got to be careful when you stick the kids in but you get to this stage of the season I think we need energies and good fitness levels.

"People maybe look at Danny, perhaps Adam not so much. People go to reserve games where he has done well. We have options in the midfield area but no so many wide."

With North End still in a relegation battle, Ferguson has urged the supporters to get behind the team this weekend.

"It's important that we all stick together, that is definitely the key. I've said that to the players and that includes the punters," he said.

"They are going to be frustrated, there are going to be fingers pointed. If they are going to have a go at anyone have a go at me, we've just got to get over the line."
