Irvine not expecting transfer pot

Alan Irvine became Preston manager in 2007.

Preston manager Alan Irvine has revealed that he does not expect to be given any of the money from the sale of Sean St Ledger to strengthen his squad.

The central defender completed a loan move to Middlesbrough earlier this month which is to become permanent in January.

Irvine told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I don't expect to be given any of it.

"It's a decision that was made because the club needs the money and that's one of the facts of football nowadays."

"There are some very wealthy clubs. Some of them unfortunately are in our division.

"We are not one of them and you have to accept that decisions have to be made sometimes to make sure that the long term future of the club is assured rather than looking at the short term."

He added: "The club sometimes have to sell a player from time to time to make sure it survives. The club is more important than any one individual.

"I knew I wasn't coming to a wealthy club when I first came. I knew it was a club that periodically had to sell. If I get angry and frustrated it doesn't solve any problems."
