Darren Carter has revealed that he is determined to make the most of his return to Preston's first team.

The 25-year-old former Birmingham and West Brom midfielder returned to the North End line-up for the 3-0 win at Barnsley on Tuesday.

He made eight league starts last season and did not feature at all from the end of September to the end of January.

"It was nice to get the first start in the league," the midfielder told BBC Radio Lancashire.

He added: "I've kept my head down, kept working hard and waited for my chance. That's all I can do."

Carter has failed to hold down a regular place in the Preston team since being signed by Paul Simpson from West Brom in August 2007.

"Last year was nothing short of a disaster for me personally but I went away in the summer, looked at a few things and made sure I was right when I came back," Carter said.

"As a player you look at all aspects of it. If your not playing at a club, last year I didn't for large periods of time you assess everything but I enjoy the training, the lads are great here and I've still got a lot of work to do I feel at Preston.

"I had a very good pre-season, got through it and I feel really great for it.

"It's all about getting a good run of games, get some form and help the team win."
