Nicholson says Preston are seeking more goals from midfield (Getty)
Preston midfielder Barry Nicholson believes Paul McKenna's decision to extend his contract at Deepdale is important for the club's success.
The North End captain, 30, signed a new three-year deal earlier this month, which is likely to keep him at the club for the rest of his career.
"Getting him signed was vital," Nicholson told BBC Radio Lancashire.
"He's been brilliant with me and talking [to us] on the park. He's certainly vital for the team."
Nicholson, 29, joined Preston on a free transfer from Aberdeen in the summer and scored his first goal for the club against Crystal Palace at the weekend.
And he is keen to improve on his tally of nine from last season.
"That's certainly what I want to do," the midfielder said. "It's an aim to add goals from midfield, so if I can beat nine I'll be happy."
