Nugent's impressive form earned him an England under-21 call-up |
Preston boss Paul Simpson is determined to keep hold of striker David Nugent. The 21-year-old has recently been linked with several Premiership clubs and scored two impressive goals in the 3-1 victory at Wolves on Friday.
And Simpson told BBC Five Live Sport: "The chairman Derek Shaw definitely does not want to sell him.
"I think he realises that what we are trying to do here can be right for him. But there are other people trying to fill his head with other ideas."
Crystal Palace boss Peter Taylor recently admitted he might make a move for Nugent, while Portsmouth have been strongly linked.
Simpson added: "He needs to have a good steady season and if he does what he is good at over 35 matches, we will really have to batten down hatches to stop him from going away.
"This is an important season for David Nugent because he has had a couple of seasons of disrupted football with injuries."
Nugent spent four weeks out injured last season with a broken metatarsal bone in his foot but he was still named the Football League's young player of the year.
