Portsmouth chief executive David Lampitt has called on the Football League to give his club a chance to compete with their Championship rivals.

Transfer embargo-hit Pompey could find out on Thursday whether they can come out of administration.

"What we're looking for is that we're dealt with fairly," he told BBC Radio Solent's fans' forum.

"We ask to be given a chance in a sporting competition, and that's what we're fighting for."

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs claims it is owed a total of £37m and is challenging a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA) which would allow Portsmouth to exit administration - an outcome is expected on Thursday.

Meanwhile, manager Steve Cotterill told the forum he is confident that Jamie Ashdown will re-sign for the club before the weekend, enabling Pompey to have a senior goalkeeper for their Championship opener at Coventry City.

Under the rules of the club's administration, Pompey are allowed a maximum of 20 players in their squad, and all signings need to be ratified by the Football League.

The club have made it public that Kevin-Prince Boateng and John Utaka are negotiating moves away from Fratton Park, but Cotterill could have them at his disposal for the opening games of the season.
