James encouraged by takeover talk

Portsmouth goalkeeper David James says he has been encouraged by the news that a group led by chief executive Peter Storrie is in talks to buy the club.

Uncertainty over Sulaiman Al Fahim's proposed takeover at Fratton Park had led to speculation over James' future.

"We got the news before we left for the Birmingham game about the potential position with the club and the future," James told BBC Radio Solent.

"It's a very positive note for us to work on."

Pompey accepted a bid from Dubai businessman Al Fahim in May, but the protracted nature of the deal has led to doubts emerging over his financial backing.

However, Al Fahim could still be a partner in the new consortium, with a club statement saying that the new group "is very positive about the talks and is confident a deal can be completed."

The uncertainty over Al Fahim's takeover have severely hampered Portsmouth's preparations for the new season, with Glen Johnson and Peter Crouch leaving Fratton Park and manager Paul Hart having to rely to mainly on loan signings and free transfers.

Wednesday's 1-0 loss at Birmingham was Pompey's second defeat from as many Premier League games this season, but James said that the South Coast side are not far from a change in fortunes.

"We're looking to be in a healthier position - a bit more fine tuning and work before Arsenal, and who knows?" said the England international.

"Who'd have thought Burnley would beat Manchester United?"
