Port Vale chairman Bill Bratt has told BBC Radio Stoke he is unhappy that Mike Newton has made his interest in investing in the club public.
The Stoke-born businessman met fans on Sunday to outline his plans after offering to invest about £400,000.
"I don't believe that we should be negotiating in the public arena," Bratt said. "Certain people have gone out into the media and blown it up."
"It's not the correct and professional way to deal with it."
He continued: "We all agreed confidentiality at the start and that's been blown wide apart.
"I don't think he's done himself any favours with some of the supporters either because I think they can see he's trying to push the agenda when we haven't finalised negotiations or got all of the information that we require.
"Mr Newton is a decent guy and a clever guy, but it's not the right way to do things in my view."
Former Oldham Athletic board member Newton has said he would like to become the new chairman of the League Two club if his offer of investment is accepted.
