Anyon hopeful of August return

Joe Anyon
Anyon has played over 100 games for Vale since his debut in December 2006

Port Vale goalkeeper Joe Anyon is hopeful of being fit for the start of the new League Two season.

The 22-year-old broke his fibia in the 2-1 defeat at Chesterfield on 28 March.

Anyon told BBC Radio Stoke: "In the last four weeks since the cast has come off I've been working hard and it's coming together.

"I've got another X-ray coming in the next week or so, and by the time the lads get back into pre-season training I should be not that far behind them."

Anyon added: "The injury probably came at the right time for me, at the end of the season. I would have hated to have been injured at the start of the season.

"You just have to hold your hands up and say it was bad luck, but I'm sure that I'll be testing it fully when we get back into training."

Anyon passed a century of appearances for Vale in January, and will battle with youngster Chris Martin for the goalkeeper's jersey next season.

The former Blackburn trainee was named as the club's player of the season for 2008/9.
