Port Vale defender Gareth Owen is sure his side will end their poor run if they maintain the form they showed in Saturday's 1-0 defeat by Chesterfield.

Vale, who have won just one of their last six League Two games, face Rotherham and Rochdale over Christmas.

And Owen told BBC Radio Stoke: "It doesn't take rocket science to show we need one hell of a run to get back into contention for the play-offs.

"But if we keep putting in performances like that then results will improve."

The game against the Spireites saw the 26-year-old make his fifth appearance for Vale since joining on loan from Stockport in November and, despite being a relative newcomer at the club, he took over the captain's armband following the sending-off of Marc Richards.

It was a proud moment for Owen, who explained: "It's an honour to be captain of any football team, and when the chance came I had no hesitation of taking it.

"I've been captain before at Stockport, and I hope the way we played in the second half was down to a little bit of organisation, so hopefully that will carry on for the future."
