Plymouth Argyle's on-loan full-back David Gray says he did not score an own goal on his debut in the 3-1 FA Cup defeat at Arsenal on Saturday.

The Manchester United defender, 20, was thrust straight into the Plymouth team just two days after joining the club.

And despite being credited with an own goal for Arsenal's second goal, Gray says Nicklas Bendtner scored it.

"I honestly never knew anything of it, he just beat me to the ball and put it in," Gray told BBC Radio Devon.

"I never knew until after the match that I got credited with a goal until I got a few texts off my mates saying 'well done you've scored on your debut'.

"I definitely never got a touch on it, which I'm quite disappointed about, because hopefully I'd have defended it a lot better."

The match was only Gray's third first team appearance, having played once for Manchester United at Crewe in the Carling Cup in 2006 and once for Crewe at Nottingham Forest in League One a year later.

The Scot said: "It was the biggest stage playing in front of 60,000 against one of the greatest teams in Europe - it was a great experience for me.

I want to play as many games as I can and gain as much experience as I can because the level I'm at now I need to play as much first team football as I can to progress

"Everyone was dying to get on the pitch. Going in as underdogs the pressure was off and our aim was to go and work as hard as we could and achieve as much as we could.

"To get to 80 minutes and still be in the game was quite an achievement."

Gray has joined fellow Manchester United youngster Craig Cathcart at Argyle and and says having a friend at a faraway club is a great help.

"I played with Craig for nearly a year in the reserves and it's always good to know a face," he said.

And Gray hopes his time at Home Park can be productive both for him and Argyle.

"I want to play as many games as I can and gain as much experience as I can because the level I'm at now I need to play as much first team football as I can to progress."
