Peterborough United defender Kieran Charnock has said he wants to win a first-team place by the time Posh kick off their League One campaign.

Charnock, 23, missed much of last season with a knee ligament injury and hamstring problems.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I was never fully match fit last season.

"But I'm hoping this season I can get in the team and get a good run, and show what I can do, as I don't feel I showed my full potential last season."

With Chris Westwood and Craig Morgan striking up a strong central defensive partnership in his absence, Charnock knows he faces a challenge to get back into manager Darren Ferguson's first-team plans.

"They [Westwood and Morgan] played really well last season and were a big part in us getting promotion."

But he added: "You never know what's going to happen in football and one of them could get injured and have a season like I've just had, but touch wood they don't."

Charnock insisted he was already working hard to be as fit as possible for the start of pre-season training.

"I've started doing a bit this week so hopefully I'll be pretty fit by the time pre-season starts and I can just kick on from there," he said
