Midfielder Adam Murray admits Oxford United's players are now playing for their futures at the Kassam Stadium.
Manager Chris Wilder has warned his underachieving squad that they do not have long to impress him and Murray says their jobs are now on the line.
"At the minute there is more to play for than there has been for a long time," Murray, 27, told BBC Oxford.
"The gaffer has made it clear that if people don't put the work in then they won't be here next season."
United dropped from 11th to 14th in the Blue Square Premier after being deducted five points for fielding an unregistered player.
Wilder replaced the sacked Darren Patterson in December.
Meanwhile, young Oxford striker Alex Fisher has joined Oxford City on loan.
