Burnell has been captain at Northampton and Bristol City

Oxford United have named midfielder Joe Burnell as their new captain, replacing Adam Murray.

The 27-year-old will lead the U's out on Saturday at Kidderminster after Murray stepped down, claiming the armband had affected his performances.

Burnell, a summer signing, told BBC Oxford: "It's a honour to captain any club. I have captained most clubs I have been at.

"It's something I enjoy and I don't mind taking it on."

Burnell has played for Bristol City, Wycombe and most recently Northampton Town.
