Oldham have beaten off a number of other clubs to sign former Southend skipper Kevin Maher on a one-year deal.
The 31-year-old Irish midfielder had been training with Gillingham but has opted to move to Boundary Park.
He was released after 10 years at Roots Hall in May and boss John Sheridan is delighted to sign the veteran.
"He has great experience, a bit of grit and he puts himself about and will help the younger players about the place," Sheridan told the club website.
Maher enjoyed a two-month loan spell with Gillingham last season, making seven appearances during his time at Priestfield.
The former Shrimpers captain began his career as a trainee with Tottenham Hotspur before joining Southend in 1998.
