Maher impressed fans during his loan spell at Priestfield (PA)
Gillingham still hope to sign Kevin Maher following his successful loan spell at Priestfield last season.
Having been released by Southend after a decade at Roots Hall, the midfielder attended training at Gillingham for the first time on Thursday.
Boss Mark Stimson assumed Maher's spell with the Gills was over after last season but that may not be the case.
"He'd be a great addition to us because he's got the quality you look for in a team," Stimson told BBC Radio Kent.
"It's alright having a team that's super fit but if you haven't got that quality sometimes you can't open that door that's always closed, and Kevin's got that."
Stimson revealed that the 31-year-old has also been in talks with a League One club.
Meanwhile, Gillingham have confirmed interest in Bristol Rovers striker Richard Walker.
However Stimson played down the link saying there is another striker who looks a more likely option.
