Former Derby defender Paul Boertien is training with League One side Oldham. The 28-year-old, released by the Rams this summer after eight years, may feature in Friday's friendly at Barrow.
He could earn a contract at Boundary Park if he impresses Latics boss John Sheridan, who is looking for more left-sided options.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Terry Smith, 19, who was released by Oldham at the end of last season, has joined Blue Square North side Southport.
He had a loan spell at Haig Avenue late last season, but was unable to prevent their relegation from the Conference.
