Notts County captain John Thompson says his side are excited at the prospect of working for new manager Paul Ince.

Ince, who has managerial experience with Blackburn, MK Dons and Macclesfield, was appointed on Thursday to replace Craig Short.

Thompson told BBC Radio Nottingham: "Everybody knows what he did in his career and so far in management.

"His record speaks for itself and everybody is excited at the prospect of working with him."

Ince, 43, becomes the sixth boss at Meadow Lane in just over a year, following in the footsteps of Ian McParland, Hans Backe, Dave Kevan, Steve Cotterill and Short.

The Magpies are four points adrift of the League One play-offs and Thompson feels Ince is the man to guide Notts to promotion.

"We feel like we are a good enough team," Short added.

"It's not just in the dressing room, but I think the chairman [Ray Trew] with the decision he made this week, he has proved to everyone that he really thinks we can get there.

"If there is a possibility of doing it this season it's brilliant, and I think that he has shown by bringing in Paul Ince to take us to the next level."

Despite the excitement about the arrival of the former England and Manchester United midfielder, Thompson has expressed his sadness at the departure of Short.

He said: "We're all sad to see the manager go, he was a gentleman at the club and he did very well for us we thought.

"The results weren't good enough in the end and the chairman made a decision which he has every right to do and we have to get on with things now."
