Notts County manager Craig Short says he is not going to rush into making new signings for next season.
The former Magpies defender was appointed as the club's new manager on a three-year deal 4 June.
The 41-year-old told the club website: "Just because I've started the job doesn't mean I have to make my mark straight away.
"There are plenty of players out there. I want them to have played in this level or the level above if possible."
He added: "We have been chatting to players and we're pursuing things but we're not going to rush into things.
"That's one thing managers have told me. They have been in the game a lot longer than me and they have said don't rush it."
Short said he wanted to bring in five or six players to add strength to the squad.
"It gives the players here competition but saying that I want to give the players a chance.
"Neil [Warnock] gave us a chance when we got promoted years ago and a lot of teams do it twice [get promoted]."
Short led Ferencvaros to seventh in the Hungarian top-flight last season.
He spent three years as a player at Meadow Lane, making 128 league appearances between 1989 and 1992, after signing from Scarborough.
