Magpies swoop for Forest defender

Notts County manager Ian McParland has signed defender Brendan Moloney on a six-month loan deal from near neighbours Nottingham Forest.

The Magpies have been lacking cover at right-back after Phil Picken's loan deal expired and Adam Tann left the club at the end of the season.

McParland was delighted to sign the 20-year-old Forest Academy graduate.

"Brendan's a very promising young player and he has been a target for some time," he said.

"In fact, I tried to get him in last season but we couldn't finalise a deal.

"It is nice to have finally landed him and I believe we have a player on our hands who is more than capable of performing at this level.

"When I saw him play for Forest's first-team last season I thought he was one of their best players. I've always kept my eye on him - and I'm really pleased to have him on board."

Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Moloney is County's fifth summer capture and McParland believes his squad is starting to take shape.

He said: "I'm more than happy with the options we have at the back now I've brought Brendan and Graeme Lee into the club.

"We've got some good players here and it is down to them to fight it out for a place because no-one is assured of an automatic start in the team."

Moloney has had loan spells at Chesterfield and Rushden & Diamonds during the last two seasons, and also broke into the Forest first-team last term, making 12 league appearances.
