Davies urges fans to back Forest

New Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies says he wants to take the Reds back to top-flight football - but that there are more pressing short-term goals.

The 44-year-old signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Forest on Thursday.

Davies told BBC Radio Nottingham: "We all know the short-term objective, which is crucial.

"We can then look at trying to compete at the top end of the table and put this club back where it belongs, which is obviously in the Premier League."

Davies, who officially takes charge on Monday, added: "It's a great challenge ahead, no doubt, but one that I'm very excited about.

"We've got to give this team time to show us what they can do - I'm certainly not intending to come in and make quick, rash decisions because that can sometimes go against you.

"We've got to look at the squad and try to get the balance right between experience and youth, and the most important thing is winning games of football."

The former Derby boss succeeds fellow Scot Colin Calderwood, who was sacked following a dismal 4-2 home defeat to Doncaster on Boxing Day.

Forest - fourth from bottom in the Championship - face Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday.
