Norwich boss Paul Lambert wants Michael Nelson cover

Norwich City boss Paul Lambert aims to sign a new defender after Michael Nelson was ruled out through injury.

Lambert is already without defender Zak Whitbread and a scan on 30-year-old Nelson's ankle has revealed he could be set for a long lay-off.

The City chief told BBC Radio Norfolk: "He'll out a few weeks, we hope he will be back sooner rather than later.

"We need to try something that's for sure. We'll try and get somebody in this week."

Nelson, who has helped the Canaries to back-to-back clean sheets in the Championship, hobbled out of Saturday's 2-0 defeat of Swansea and was replaced by Jens Berthel Askou.

The Dane retained his place for the 3-1 League Cup loss to Blackburn, marking his return to the starting line-up with an injury time goal, but Lambert admits the loss of Nelson is frustrating.

"He'll be out for a while, which is not great for us at the minute," he said.

"Michael's going to miss a few weeks. He's been outstanding, he and Elliott Ward I thought had been terrific."
