Ian Sampson backs Northampton Town midfielder Thornton

Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson says there should be more goals to come from midfielder Kevin Thornton.

The 23-year-old came off the bench to score with a long range strike in the 2-0 win against Shrewsbury - his first goal in more than two years.

Sampson told BBC Radio Northampton: "We've been banging on at him to get a shot away, rather than keep dribbling.

"Maybe the penny has dropped with him. He gives us that attacking option and anyone could see it worked well."

Thornton has made six of his nine appearances for Northampton from the bench, in a season disrupted by injury and suspension.
