Brown has made almost 300 senior appearances in 12 years.
Northampton Town have signed former Brentford goalkeeper Simon Brown on a contract until mid-January.
The 32-year-old is able to join the club outside of the transfer window because he is currently a free agent.
"We need an experienced keeper at the club," said Cobblers caretaker manager Ian Sampson.
"Chris Dunn and the rest of the players will benefit from his arrival. Simon has a wealth of experience, and he is a good age for a keeper."
Brown started his career with Tottenham Hotspur before moving to Colchester United, where he made more than 100 starts in 5 years.
He joined Hibernian in 2004, and most recently played for Brentford.
Chris will be desperate to claim that shirt back
Ian Sampson
Despite being offered a new deal, he left the Griffin Park club when his contract expired on July 1st.
Sampson says that competition for the number one shirt will help Chris Dunn's long-term development.
"[Chris] may well benefit from having a breather at this stage, although Simon knows Chris will be desperate to claim that shirt back and that is the way it should be."
Subject to clearance from the Football League, Brown will be available to face Notts County on Saturday.
